The author Leon Bing is a woman of about middle age. She first began her inquiry into the gang scene while working at a magazine called L.A. Weekly. She started out doing interviews for other articles that had mentioned gangs and her curiosity prompted her to do research in preparation for a piece she was currently undertaking at L.A. Weekly. Her journalistic adventures brought her into a very closed and dangerous world that few outsiders have ever delved into. While on her investigation Bing interviewed many of the reputable gangsters that occupied these bullet hole ridden neighborhoods. The testimonies of these thugs speak for themselves. She rarely scares from the unpredictable environment of these urban ghettos. Leon Bing in essence does what it takes to get the job done. She is a tough as nails journalist as it shows in her work. When Bing first began interviews with gang members in the streets, the one question that was always brought up from friends, family, and even in some instances the homeboys was, Arent you afraid? Bings answer was always the same: I wasnt. Not because she was a courageous person; she was afraid of nearly everything from illness to the loss of loved ones. But she felt no fear toward the youngsters that she interviewed. What she did feel was the surprise at the discoveries that she made within herself. E.
